Open each one to discover a unique love note inside the foil wrapped around the chocolate, rather like a fortune cookie for lovers. The chocolate itself has a creamy centre studded with crunchy chopped hazelnut pieces and topped with a whole hazelnut, all of which is then double-dipped into amber-coloured caramelised chocolate. Wonderful with coffee, aged rum or the toasted flavour of oolong and genmaicha; but these chocolate kisses are the perfect way to tell someone you love them. As the name suggests, Baci Perugina come from the area surrounding Perugia in Italy, a city that loves chocolate so much that it has its own school dedicated to the subject. The origin of this iconic confectionery can be traced back to the early 20th Century, when Luisa Spagnoli kneaded leftover hazelnut grains into her famous dark chocolate. They were originally called a "Cazzotto" meaning "punch", but deemed a little unromantic, they were renamed "Baci" meaning "kisses". The chocolates contain a little love note, which have evolved throughout their history. Early ones used to have unusual messages such as "un bacio senza barba è una zuppa senza sale", which translates as "a beardless kiss is a soup without salt".
