Archie returns home to discover the family estate in dire trouble and is hoodwinked into staying on. A never-ending series of obstacles including indignant employees, his mother Molly's (Susan Hampshire) gambling debts, the eventual death of his father, affairs of the heart with Lexie (Dawn Steele) and parsimonious city bankers intent on foreclosure dog his every step.
