Inspired by coastal culture and long-standing traditions of those who live by the sea, eclectic Parisian fashion brand KENZO’s SS/20 collection features maritime references adorning its effortlessly cool streetwear pieces.Fastened with statement mother-of-pearl buttons down the centre-front placket, the ‘Teddy’ blouson jacket features a bomber-style construction with a partial stand collar, long raglan sleeves and ribbed trims at the neck, cuffs and hem. Bright white piping along the outer sleeves offsets the jacket’s eggshell-hue and lends a sporty, retro feel. Embroidered on the left chest is a mermaid motif, a nod to founder Kenzo Takada’s Japanese heritage and the Ama - a group of Japanese female free-divers, who, for over 2000 years have dived to the ocean floor to forage for seafood such as shrimp, urchins or even pearls for their communities. Admired for their tenacity and bravery, these modern-day superheroines - dubbed the ‘last mermaids of Japan’ – are celebrated throughout the seasonal collection.
