I was determined to capture the perfect shot of an iceberg this year. The biggest obstacle was the terrible weather. The wet, cold, & extremely foggy conditions were preventing me from getting the perfect iceberg shot. But I was hopeful & not giving up. Pictures of icebergs were popping up all over social media, & I was anxious to get the shot. I was going to drive an hour away to get an iceberg photo, but the extreme fog had other plans. When my hopes were almost dashed, I heard about an iceberg closer to home in Cape St. Francis, Pouch Cove. I had been there before on a hike, but the road wasn't paved, & would be ideal to have a pickup truck just to travel up the pothole-covered dirt road. I decided to take a chance & get a few sunset photos of the unseen iceberg. They had paved some of the road, but it was mostly still deep potholes. I drove very slowly up the dirt road to the cape, gently driving over potholes as slowly as possible without destroying my car. When I finally arrived at the destination, the wind was high, it was raining, & the fog was so thick that I could barely make out the outline of something resembling an iceberg in the distance. Fearing the worst of bleak weather expectations for the next 10 days & a fast-moving current, the iceberg could drift out into the ocean anytime but this one seemed to be landlocked which bought me some time. Tomorrow's forecast is cloudy at sunrise, a small window of time to possibly get the shots. I was willing to take the chance & come back in the morning. Holding my breath & gripping the steering wheel, I drove slowly back in the dark & fog, down the pothole road, & finally what seemed like an eternity, to the safety of Main road. The next morning, I awoke before sunrise & made the 40-minute drive to the Cape once again in the fog. If it was thick fog when I got there, I would just enjoy the picnic breakfast my boyfriend Gary had packed & call it a day. It was a little foggy when I arrived, & I made it safely without damaging my vehicle. But what a spectacular sight to see a big, beautiful iceberg not far from shore! I was able to capture the perfect shots of the magnificent iceberg. The thrill of getting the shot made it all worth it.
