Description
A beautiful delicately decorated handmade vase. An ideal item in which to present flowers. The dimensions of the vases are as follows: height 18 - 20 cm, diameter at the top 8.5 - 10 cm. I make each vase myself & this is why s there is variation in size & decoration between each item - each one is unique. The current vases are made from a cream coloured clay, which is visible on the inside of the item. The vases are made on the wheel & once the clay dries out a little, I decorate them. I use coloured slips (liquid clay which I stain different colours), & sgraffito technique. The slips provide a colour through which marks are made usually with a fine needle, showing the colour of the clay behind. Following a biscuit firing, I apply a transparent food safe glaze & fire my kiln to 1250 oC, a stoneware temperature. The design is inspired by my love of wildflower meadows & hedgerows. I spent time observing a local meadow, Shipbourne Common, change over the seasons. It is delightful seeing the apparent lightness of the flowers responding to a breeze & the depth of colour as you explore down to the earth, seeing the layers of plants. Each vase has my makers mark added to it. It's my initials made into a butterfly. All items are packaged in a special cardboard box, secured with paper ribbon & a business card. They are then placed in a further box with compostable chips for transit. Occasionally I use other packaging in order to reuse it & avoid sending it to landfill.
