Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood & decorated them with evergreens & candles if wood was scarce. The earliest known decorations were nuts, & fruit hung from branches to represent fertility & abundance. These were later replaced by candles & stars made from paper or tinsel, which eventually evolved into glass balls filled with water that could be illuminated by candlelight. I love learning why we have these rituals & these traditions. When I was painting & designing these little prim houses, I started to wonder why we hang ornaments & such from trees & why we even have trees in our homes in the first place.
