The chocolate itself has a creamy centre studded with crunchy chopped hazelnut pieces and topped with a whole hazelnut, all of which is then double-dipped in the finest dark chocolate. As the name suggests, Baci Perugina Original Dark come from the area surrounding Perugia in Italy, a city that loves chocolate so much that it has its own school dedicated to the subject. The origin of this iconic confectionery can be traced back to the early 20th Century, when Luisa Spagnoli kneaded leftover hazelnut grains into her famous dark chocolate. They were originally called a "Cazzotto" meaning "punch", but deemed a little unromantic, they were renamed "Baci" meaning "kisses". The chocolates contain a little love note, which have evolved throughout their history. Early ones used to have unusual messages such as "un bacio senza barba è una zuppa senza sale", which translates as "a beardless kiss is a soup without salt". With the shiny foil wrapper, the unique message, the aromatic dark chocolate, the crunchy pieces of hazelnut and the melt-in-the-mouth texture; these are a treat for all the senses.
