Striking cards with gold foil highlights. Adapted from "border and centre designs suitable for tablecloths and shawls", from an early 19th century album of French textile designs. Chintz, or floralprinted calico fabrics, were originally imported from India in the 16th century but, as they became increasingly popular in Europe, English and French manufacturers, created their own designs and fabrics, with their adaptations taking on distinctive styles.
