Description
Exotic specimens which originated in South America: the amaryllis was imported to Europe by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. The name "Amaryllis" derives from the Greek word ‘amarysso’, meaning "to sparkle". Native to Mexico, Christmasblooming poinsettia plants became better known thanks to propagation by Joel Roberts Poinsett (17791851), the first United States Ambassador to Mexico, who brought the cheery, red plants back to his South Carolina home in the 1820s; gifting many of the plants to his friends and fellow botanists. Intricate centrepieces which pop up from flat when opened to send your Christmas greetings.
