Description
Hawthorn are beautiful flowering hedges that bring much fascination to the garden, including sharp thorns, green leaves, white blossom, and red fruits. Commonly known as Quickthorn or Mayflower, these hardy and deciduous hedges look impressive from spring with green leaves and clusters of dainty white flowers that release a floral aroma to delight the senses, without overwhelming other natural perfumes. The thorny branches and dense nature of these hedges create a near-impenetrable barrier, perfect for edging the garden to soften noise or wind. When autumn rolls around, the white flowers develop into dark red berries, called ‘haws’. A welcome boost to garden wildlife, the red fruits will draw the attention of birds in autumn, while the foliage offers an excellent nesting space and ample shelter for our feathered friends. More than 100 types of insects, including butterflies and buzzing bees, can be seen benefitting from this hedge during the springtime. These hedges are quick to grow, at a rate of 40-60cm per year, and will happily thrive in most soil types and garden locations, saving intensely wet or fully shaded conditions. This variety will even stand tall in particularly windy or coastal locations.
