Museum Selection Wooden Acrobatic Monkey
Description
Acrobatic toy, squeeze the sides to see the acrobat swing and somersault. Circus acts proved so popular in the late18th and 19th centuries that theatres, such as London’s Drury Lane’, included highwire, aerial and clowning acts as part of their interval entertainment. In 1829 Jocko and Jacko – dressed as monkeys – ran amok in the galleries and then made an aerial entrance to arrive onstage.
