Description
With a slow growing, compact habit, Thompson & Morgan Star Magnolia ‘Stellata’ is a classic, deciduous shrub that is perfectly suited to smaller gardens. Silky buds open to reveal exquisite, pristine-white blooms in early spring. The flowers are lightly scented and are borne in profusion, covering the naked branches in a flurry of petals over several weeks. As spring progresses, Thompson & Morgan Magnolia Stellata becomes cloaked with a dense covering of attractive mid-green leaves. Modestly proportioned, this hardy Magnolia makes a superb specimen plant for sheltered borders or large containers. Plant Thompson & Morgan Star Magnolias in sunny or semi-shaded positions, with protection from hard spring frosts and cold winds. Magnolias prefer a rich, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost to help improve the soil, ensuring it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Magnolias establish quicker when their roots are in shade. Apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, garden compost or manure following planting, taking care not to mound up around the stem as this may cause rot. When growing Thompson & Morgan Magnolia Stellata in patio containers, use a blend of ericaceous and soil based composts. Water Thompson & Morgan Star Magnolias regularly throughout the growing season until fully established. Apply a mulch of garden compost or well-rotted bark chips to the base of the plant in spring. Magnolia Stellata require very little pruning, other than to remove damaged or crossing stems and to maintain their shape.Culinary note: The young flowers, once separated, can be picked and used either on their own as a treat or in salads.
