Description
These pretty plants produce elegant spires of white blooms with a delightful lilac-blue picotee. The beautiful blooms are carried on strong, sturdy stems above attractive feathery green foliage – fabulous at the back of borders and excellent as cut flowers for a vase indoors. Flowering all summer long, Larkspur 'Fancy Purple Picotee' is easy to grow and can be direct sown where you want it to grow and flower.Direct sow Larkspur seeds outdoors where they are to grow from April to May in full sun, on fertile, light, well-drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 6mm (1/4") in drills spaced 30cm (12") apart. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 14-21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 15cm (6") apart. Alternatively for earlier flowering, sow Consolida seeds from August to October in 7.5cm (3") pots of good quality, moist seed compost. Place in a propagator or seal containers inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 15-20C (59-68F) until after germination. Once germinated, thin out to the strongest seedling and grow larkspur plants on in a cool, bright position. Over-winter plants in cool, bright but frost-free conditions and water sparingly.
