Description
Thompson & Morgan Honeysuckle periclymenum ‘Scentsation’ is a delightful deciduous woodbine bearing showy, pale yellow and ivory blooms from midsummer to September with a powerful, sweet perfume. Glossy scarlet berries take centre stage as the scented flowers fade, providing plenty of late summer interest and food for wild birds. Plant against a suitable, sturdy support such as trellis or strong wires attached to walls and pergolas, in fertile, moist, free-draining soil. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade. Poor soils can be improved by adding plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. When growing honeysuckle in patios containers, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No.3. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until they are fully established. Check young shoot tips regularly as honeysuckle plants are susceptible to aphid damage, particularly when grown in full sun. Prune immediately after flowering, first removing the oldest stems, then reducing the remaining stems to restrict their vigorous growth to the available space. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant in spring. Thompson & Morgan Honeysuckle periclymenum ‘Scentsation’ makes a wonderful addition to cottage gardens. Let it climb walls and fences, or train it over pergolas and doorways where its fragrance can be really appreciated. Caution: harmful if eaten.
