When growing hibiscus plants in patio containers use a soil based compost, such as John Innes No.3.Feed and water hibiscus regularly until fully established . Apply a dry mulch such as bark chips to the base if the plant in autumn to protect from winter cold. Prune hibiscus in late spring, removing any stems that have died back or been damaged over winter.
