For those with shaded patios, this fern will also thrive in a large patio container, providing a long season of colour and remaining evergreen in sheltered areas.Plant Dryopteris in a sheltered spot. Choose a position in dappled shade on fertile, moist, acidic or neutral, soil. Dryopteris ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established.
