Description
Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Nico' is a vibrant evergreen Azalea, slow growing and compact, demanding very little maintenance once established. Bright cherry red flowers are borne in abundance in May, covering the low, spreading branches of Rhododendron 'Nico'. A showy plant for the rockery and an excellent choice for raised beds and shaded woodland gardens. Grow Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Nico' in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Choose a position in moist, well drained, acidicic soil that has been enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting, so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidicity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
