Description
Rhododendron 'Barselik' is a great choice for a woodland garden or acidicic border. Forms a spreading shrub that is decorated in funnel-like orange blooms that contrast nicely against the light green foliage. The foliage stays green throughout the summer before turning to bright gold in autumn. Tolerant of sun and very low maintenance, easy for all to grow. Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acidic soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidicity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acidic-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
