Description
A really fabulous looking perennial, Alsroemeria not only boasts tall, upright stems topped with fiery and exotic-looking, intricated patterned orange and yellow blooms, but these dashing flowers are set off by a luxurious deep bronze-coloured leaves. These Peruvian Lilies are hardy throughout most of the UK, given a sunny, sheltered spot and free draining soil, so you can enjoy their rich display year after year. The stems are a generous length and the flowers are long-lasting which makes them excellent cutting material for homemade bouquets.Pot up Alstroemeria plants and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, plant Peruvian Lilies in a sunny or semi shaded position in fertile, moist, well drained soil. Alternatively, plant Alstroemeria in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.Throughout the growing season, water Peruvian lilies regularly and feed container grown plants each month. When picking alstroemeria pluck the flowers rather than cutting as plucking stimulates the rhizome encourage further growth. In autumn, cut back the old Alstroemeria flower stems and apply a dry mulch of chipped bark or straw to the base of the plant to protect it from cold winter weather. Alstroemeria prefers to be left undisturbed but can be divided in autumn or spring if clumps become overcrowded.
