Description
Vibrant Christmas cards reproducing snowscenes by Russian artist Boris Kustodiev (18781927). Includes ‘Winterfest in Moscow’, a detail of sleighs from ‘ShroveTide, 1916’ and a Russian troika and fairground scene from 1900. While we associate sleighs with Christmas, the Slavic folk festival of Maslenitsa is traditionally a time for fun, visits and sleigh rides. Occurring before Lent in the Russian Orthodox Church, it is a celebration which marks the end of winter holidays and the onset of spring.
