Simply Media are delighted to announce the release of suspense thriller Praying Mantis on DVD for the first time 17th April 2017. It’s a tale of murder and two formidable women who seek to manipulate the men around them, and each other, for their own personal gain. Directed by Primetime Emmy-nominee Jack Gold (Goodnight Mister Tom) and produced by Dickie Bamber (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), Praying Mantis is based on the novel by French author Hubert Monteilhet, and skilfully adapted for screen by BAFTA-winner Philip Mackie (The Naked Civil Servant). This highly regarded and sought after two-part television movie was one of Channel 4's earliest commissioned dramas, and is a smart and absorbing mystery with plenty of twists and surprises to keep audiences guessing all the way. Set in gorgeous Normandy and featuring a thrilling battle of wits between the lead actors that keeps you hooked until the dramatic climax at the end, Praying Mantis stars Carmen Du Sautoy (The Man with the Golden Gun) and Cherie Lunghi (Mary Shelley's Frankenstein). Du Sautoy is perfectly cast as the sinister Vera Canova, wife to university professor Paul (Pinkas Braun), who has just been made beneficiary to her husband Paul’s considerable fortune after his first wife and child died under suspicious circumstances. Lunghi co-stars as the seemingly innocent and free-spirited Beatrice. After being hired as an assistant to the Canova household after the suspicious suicide of the previous aide, she starts a short-lived affair with Paul. She ends the relationship when shy and quiet Christian, played by Golden Globe-nominee Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Caribbean), proposes to her. The first impressions of our cast of characters is deceptive – all is not what it seems! Tensions build when a double murder plot, disguised as a crime-of-passion, is uncovered by Beatrice. Cunningly she embarks on an ingenious blackmail plot and an unforgettable rivalry between equally deceptive Vera and herself begins. With a chilling musical score composed by Primetime Emmy-nominee Carl Davies (Cranford) that fits the ambiance of the film, and featuring a well-known cast of supporting characters including Clive Swift (Keeping Up Appearances), Barbara Young (Coronation Street), Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean), Friedrich Von Thun (Schindler's List) and David Schofield (Gladiator), Praying Mantis is an intelligent, engrossing tale that will keep audiences captivated by the performances of its colourful cast of cunning and deplorable characters right until the end.
