Description
This Lewis chess set is named after the Scottish Island where a medieval games hoard was found. Dating from the late 12th to early 13th century, the hoard probably came from Norway and included a chess set with pieces made from walrus-ivory and sperm whale tooth. The original set is now displayed in the National Museum of Scotland, and here Royal Selangor has replicated it, intricately making the pieces in pewter and using medieval patterns to mark the board. Pewter is almost maintenance-free as it does not react with the air to oxidise or tarnish. It can attract dust and dirt, but all that's required is an occasional wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Over time and with use, pewter develops a pleasing and subdued patina unique to the metal which is part of the beauty of investing in this material.
