Description
For the Chinese the butterfly is a symbol of joy and happiness, and particularly of marital bliss. This is why it was often used as decoration on Chinese bedroom furniture such as on wedding cabinets and chests that a bride would bring with her to a marriage. Although these bedside chests seem more modern in design, the butterfly handles are highly appropriate, and match the handles on the Large Sloping Cabinet. The tapered style is also similar and, although historically bedside chests like these were not used by the Chinese, the ‘round cornered’ sloping frame is a reminder of Chinese cabinet design from hundreds of years ago.
