Description
A jubilant jigsaw image reproducing "Peace Celebrations, Moscow", 1945; 75 years on from the announcement of Victory in Europe. The atmospheric painting by Sir Claude Francis Barry (English, 18831970) reflects a pointillist influence. The painting records the scene in Moscow on Victory Day, observed on 9th May. The German surrender to the Allies came into effect on 8th May 1945 but a second document, signed by the Germans at a ceremony in Berlin on 8th May was recognised by the Russians as the ultimate Instrument of Surrender. The effect of time zones meant that 9th May became Victory Day in Russia.
