Vintage icon… Sammode Studio pays tribute to a great French designer, Michel Mortier, with the relaunch of his M3 lamp. Design, interior architecture, artistic direction, graphic design, journalism, not to forget teaching: Michel Mortier was wonderfully enwrapped in the post-war creative euphoria. His style? A spirit that rejects anecdotal styles, an elegant design that leans towards minimalist, rounded off with a subtle approach to colours and materials. His intelligent yet joyful mastery of space made Mortier one of the leading decorative artists of his generation. He was part of the generation of French designers that founded the Atelier de Recherche Plastique (ARP), alongside Pierre Guariche and Joseph-André Motte. This unique research studio, which operated from 1954 through 1957, played a significant role in the history of design, constituting a strong wall of propositions against the rare French industrials of the time, drifting towards a sincere modernist approach. A low-key yet uncompromising man, Michel Mortier received all of the awards and titles that a designer could dream of: The Triennale de Milan silver medal at 26 years old and the gold medal at 29 years old, and the René-Gabriel award at 38 years old! Michel Mortier's pieces have integrated the largest design collections around, such as those found in the CNAP, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Etienne Métropole, and even the national decorative arts collection. Michel Mortier showed a tireless and intense interest in the domain of light and illumination, paired with an extraordinary imagination. In the early 1950s, Michel Mortier designed a series of lighting solutions that he christened with the sumptuously simple name, M: M1, M2, M3 and so on. They were all produced by lamp manufacturer Disderot. Each of them harbours its own innovative features. In 1952, Michel Mortier designed the M3 desk lamp, which can also be used as a wall light (the lamp comes with two mounting hooks to install it on the wall). The lampshade is adjustable upwards and downwards, enabling users to direct the light it emits. M3 is imbued with a stunning modernity and boasts a thorough design with has been spared no attention when it comes to functionality. The subtle design of the two-tone lacquered metal lampshade is mounted atop a tubular steel base. Sammode's innovation, and the quest for aesthetic and technological progress, doesn't come without the groundwork done by Michel Mortier himself. For the relaunch of the M3 lamp, Sammode has contributed its industrial expertise in light manufacture, and has added its touch in the balance of the lighting and its profound knowledge of metalwork. Remaining loyal to the original design whilst integrating modern technologies, the M3 lamp by Sammode boasts an exceptional quality of production, entirely manufactured in France. Elegant, delicate and sculptural, the M3 lamp wonderfully lights up a desk, a side table or a bedside table.
