Description
Individually hand thrown slipware plates wheel thrown in terracotta clay. An absolute joy to make as I love throwing on my wheels, plates of all sorts of sizes. Slipware colourings (as opposed to stoneware glazes) just add to the effect & these are slipped in my minimalist style of doing whatever I feel like at that point in time. These plates have a freehand wavy pattern on the blue rim. This set is glazed cream yellow slipware with a blue outer rim with pattern. Approximately each plate is 255 mm diameter x 25 mm rim height. The hardest wearing is Stoneware , either buff or white, which is high fired at 1240 c & creates pottery that is suitable for ovenware, tableware & ornaments. Plates & bowl etc made in stoneware is dishwasher & microwaves proof. When placing all ceramics in the oven it is always important to beware of thermal shock so it is not advised to place studio pottery that is cold into a hot oven but rather place in early as the oven gets warmed up. Terracotta slipware work is different & is in fact my favoured clay to work with as I love creating pottery that is brightly coloured. As unglazed Terracotta is slightly porous, a glaze is usually added to make it more hardwearing & suitable for use on the table or in the oven. This clear glaze when added, can sometimes craze over with use. It is advised to hand wash terracotta pottery rather than place them in a dishwasher but if you do use a dishwasher then after taking them out place them on the side for a couple of hours for them to dry naturally a bit more. Pottery is my passion - I would spend all day sitting at my wheel, if I could! I am largely self-taught, & have pickup up plenty of hints from my many mistakes over the years, developing my skills, & turning what began as a hobby into my full-time occupation. The majority of my work is for restaurants, hotels & other commercial enterprises, but after a health scare in the last couple of years, I realised that on the one hand I needed to dial back on the long hours, & on the other, needed to express my own creativity, & 'play' again. Hence I have created these one-off, individual pieces that I am now selling on Etsy. These are fun, unique pieces, which I am making simply for the joy of it. I hope you take as much pleasure from them as I do! All my work is thrown, glazed & fired by me, with no assistant, or apprentice. I use New Zealand-built wheels, & have four, for different coloured clays (buff, white, terracotta & black/chocolate, if you were curious). I use a pugmill to make the clay soft, & have three electric kilns. My dream is to be able to use my wood-fired kiln more, when I have time to manage it properly. I use a wheel to make all my work, with a very few exceptions, which are always clearly marked. Glazes are sometimes my own creations, or
