Open coil spring units are made up of rows of hourglass shaped springs connected at the top and bottom by a spiral wire, known as a helical wire. To avoid border breakdown the edge of the spring unit is strengthened by a thick, rod-edge wire that adds support to the perimeter of the mattress.
