For Carpeted Floors step 1: in the area of the squeak, find the joist from above the floor using the joist finding tool in the kit. Then push the alignment and depth control fixture firmly into the carpet. step 2: using the driver bit provided to drive the screw down as far as the fixture will allow. step 3: slip the screw gripper over the screw head and rock the fixture left to right, snapping the head off. The screw breaks at the score that is set slightly below the wood of the floor. step 4: there is no breakdown to the carpet and nothing to feel with your bare foot. For Hardwood Floors step 1: in the area of the squeak, pre dill a hole with a 1/8 inch drill bit. step 2: drive the screw through the fixture as far as it will go. step 3: the thread pattern on the screw pulls the wood tight together. step 4: the head of the screw hits the top of the fixture and snaps 3/8 of an inch below the surface. step 5: fill the small hole with wood filler.
