Raku ceramic heart wall sculpture - GREEN AT HEART. Wall art hand built ceramic sculpture. Raku Fine Art. Every heart I design & make has a special meaning. This heart symbolizes the declaration of love. It is a great wall art piece that will decorate any room or it can be put on the shelf or a table. It is a wonderful & creative present. Each sculpture also has a small hole in the back to hang flush against the wall. The heart is hand built & hollow inside. The beautiful surface illuminates deep shades of copper & flashes some blue colors. The heart measures 8.5 tall by 8 wide. It is signed in the back. To fully understand the Raku Firing Process, one would have to delve into & study Japanese culture. Raku is deeply associated & intertwined with the ancient Japanese tea ceremony. Serving & drinking tea using Raku fired bowls is an age old happening that is still performed in some areas of Japan. Raku glazes contain a lot of copper that gives the fired pieces: green, red, blue & copper shades. The temperature is rather quickly run up to about 1800-2000 degrees F & then the kiln is raised, revealing red hot pieces. The piece then placed in a bucket containing combustible materials. As soon as the red hot piece comes in contact with the combustible materials, spontaneous combustion occurs. The lid is put over the can to make reduction atmosphere & let the flames seek for the oxygen removing it from the glaze & clay body of the piece. The result is black clay body & very interesting colors on the piece. No two pieces of Raku will ever be the same. It's like Christmas! Raku care: Raku ceramics by their creative process & their very nature serve only for decorative purposes & are not intended to be used for food. Keep your piece out of direct sunlight will keep the metals in the glaze from oxidizing & colors strong & vibrant. All my work is created in my home studio in Southern California.
