This silverback is a western lowland gorilla; both species of gorilla (eastern & western) are Critically Endangered thanks to poaching, disease & habitat loss. Efforts are underway to conserve these fun, clever, sentient species, but how do you go about conserving an animal with restricted, isolated habitat remaining? It would be unrealistic to assume that their habitats could be significantly extended through habitat restoration. The mountain gorilla's story has, however, been a positive one. Efforts to protect this species through ecotourism & disease control have been successful. Not only has the decline been stabilised, but the population is actually on the rise - a first for any great ape species in the modern day. Plant a tree For every wildlife art print sold, a tree will be planted in the Albertine Rift forests of Uganda as part of a wildlife habitat restoration project in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute.
