For every Endangered print sold, a tree will be planted in the Albertine Rift forests of Uganda as part of a wildlife habitat restoration project in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute. Once thought to be extinct, this critically endangered species is found only in Philippine wetlands. At the last IUCN assessment, there were 100 or so individuals dispersed across the island chain, where the species inhabits rivers, creeks & marshes & plays an important role in the freshwater ecosystem. The crocodile has been threatened by loss of habitat, persecution by people & entanglement in fishing nets. Both the species & its habitat are now protected by law & a group of conservation institutes have joined forces to undertake a captive breeding programme. This work continues to inform in-situ conservation action for the species, including reintroduction programmes. in Isabela Province, where the crocodile was rediscovered, organisations have also been raising awareness about the crocodile's story & empowering the community to help with its protection. Though recovery will take years, the hard work of conservationists is paying off & the future of this species - the only freshwater crocodile found in the Philippines - is looking positive!
