This decorative heart is handcrafted out of papier-mch, a craft that has been part of Kashmiri culture since the 15th century. The process of shaping the heart is called sakhtazi, & starts with recycled paper pulp that is soaked, molded, then dried. The surface is then coated with glue, burnished smooth, & layered with tissue paper. Then the heart is entirely hand painted, a process called naqashi. Finally, lacquer is applied to seal, giving durability to these little hearts. These decorative heart make a great gift or decoration.
