It is endemic to Mexico, & is the most common species in Jamaica. The first description was in 1703 by Carl Linnaeus as Cactus cochenillifer. Philip Miller described it as Opuntia cochenillifera in 1768. Pierre-Joseph Redout (10 July 1709 - 19 June 1840), was a painter & botanist from Belgium, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies & other flowers at Malmaison, many of which were published as large, color stipple engravings. He was nicknamed the Raphael of flowers & has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time.
