The word Nol is the French word for Christmas, stemming from the Latin word for birth. THE FIRST NOEL is an Old English Carol from the 17th century with a traditional melody. Originally published in 1833 in The Christmas Carols of W. Sandys, it is said to have an unknown author. Interestingly enough, I have found that the words & stanzas to this hymn vary from hymnal to hymnal so it may in fact have several authors from differing time periods. Who knows!
