This 1901 Vintage Spanish Poster, made to promote the Seville Fair & Holy Week (La Feria de Sevilla y Semana Santa), depicts a Priest & Woman with fan. Folkloric Art From Seville, Spain (Sevilla, Espana) The name Seville (Sevilla) brings to mind vibrant images that traditionally have been connected with southern Spain: flamenco, bullfights, sherry, & reverent Catholicism. These characteristics capture the essence of two major festivals that are celebrated in the space of three weeks each spring in Seville, the religiously somber Holy Week (Semana Santa) & the world-renowned Sevilla Fair (La Feria de Sevilla). Since the late 1800s, the city of Seville has sponsored a poster contest to advertise Holy Week & the Sevilla Fair collectively known as the Spring Festivals (Fiestas Primaverales). in 1979 the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla started a 3-year restoration project of these antique posters (the winners!) & in 1982 the posters were presented to the Spanish public in a special exhibition. These vintage posters, a reflection of Spanish folkloric art, will let you share a bit of the history, religious fervor, & romance of southern Spain. SALUD!
