Vintage Hand Painted Delft Baluster Vase - Sailing Ships Height (incl lid) 24cm/9 1/2 inch Width at the widest part in the middle 12.5cm/ 5inch This is a superb piece of antique Delftware with a rare repeat pattern of sailing ships (hand painted not transfer). I have yet to find another hand painted vase that only depicts sailing ships in a repeated pattern. The shape is a baluster vase lidded. It is in an amazing condition for it's age although quite heavily crazed but free from any noticeable chips or repairs. On the underside it does have two stroke blue markings. There is hints of red clay under the glaze so possibly this tin glazed. Also on the inside of the floor of the vase there are several round bumps, unsure if this is due to the process used by a type of firing or an intentional design. The vase is complete with it's original lid although the lid itself does not feel as though it is a perfect 100 per cent fit. Although I appreciate the beauty & the history of true Delftware I am by no means an expert or specialize in this field - therefore I cannot accurately date this piece for about to say it is at least antique in age.
