Description
Arlequin est malin - Vintage poster of the French national lottery from 1957, signed by illustrator Lefor-Openo. The French national lottery, created by the decree of article 136 of the finance law of July 22, 1933 in order to come to the aid of war invalids, veterans & victims of agricultural disasters, was at that time the largest lottery organizer in France. She hired popular artists to do the illustrations for her advertising posters, most of them featuring humorous slogans with cultural references. The national lottery succeeds the former Royal Lottery of France, & remains relevant until its dissolution in 1976. It is the French of games, which we know today, which will succeed it. This poster represents Columbine, Harlequin & Pierrot, 16th century characters belonging to the Commedia dell'arte. Pierrot is a baker who is sometimes cowardly, sometimes boastful, who is Harlequin's rival & is in love with Colombine the laundress. Here, we find Columbine who goes to Harlequin's arm, the latter victoriously holding a ticket from the national lottery in his other arm & leaving his rival behind. The interpretation is immediate, a ticket from the national lottery can tip the scales in your side! Rare product, in good condition (some small tears on the edges).
