Porcelain lithophane Mermaid & the Moon plug in night light. Handmade in our studios, it is practical & timeless, made using a lost art from the 1800's. When lit from behind, the light shining through the different thicknesses of the carving causes a highly detailed image to appear in front, almost magically. As you see, the illuminated image is so detailed, that it has a totally photographic quality to it! in addition, the relief of the carving gives the image a 3 dimensional quality when seen in person. These are not plastic, they are genuine porcelain. They will not fade, discolor, or warp with time. We have thousands of customers that have owned one of our lithophanes for literally decades. NOTE this LED does not work well with the automatic photocell plug. ~Approx 3 1/2 in wide x 5 1/2 in tall, including the plug. The porcelain is 3 1/2 x 4 1/2. ~Non porous & cleanable. ~Complete with UL listed 120v night light plug for the US & Canadian market, & a 7w incandescent bulb. ~Nicely boxed with a descriptive insert telling about this fascinating art form. ~Perfect for bathrooms or kitchens, where the outlet is up higher & you can see the image. ~It also works well to light up a dark hall or stairway. ~The porcelain is strong, but it is breakable like glass, so not recommended for a toddler's room. I start by carving the image in a translucent wax, with the wax lit from behind. I then take a plaster mold of this engraving, & we then cast a fine porcelain clay into this mold. We then kiln fire the porcelain to 2300 degrees F. to achieve it's translucency & durability. Lithophanes were invented in France in 1827, & were popular throughout Europe till the early 1900's.
