This gorgeous vintage 1970s West German fat lava handle vase by Scheurich Keramik is an exquisite & rare example of the form featuring hand painted raised floral motives in dark orange & brown over a speckled & cratered light grey glaze. Form marked 495-20 W.Germany Scheurich was established in 1954 & became known for applying many multiple glazes to a single shape or form with the fat lava volcanic texture being one of the popular in the 1960's - 1970's. They went on to become one of the largest & most prestigious manufacturers of ceramics in Germany from the 1950s to the 1980s, in addition they exported more than any other ceramics company in Germany. Some lines were specifically produced for foreign markets, such as the 'Europline' & mould designs marked 'foreign', the distribution of some forms & glazes indicates that some may have been produced for specific countries. Scheurich collaborated with many significant designers with Heinz Siery being one of the most prominent of the Mid Century era. West German pottery is the name given to pottery produced in Western Germany during the 1950s, 1960s & 1970s. This era has been viewed as the Golden Age of ceramics where potters experimented with colour, glaze, shape including the famous Fat Lava style. The condition of this vintage vase is perfect.
