The Ghost of Cassiopeia (IC 63) lies 550 light years away from earth in the constellation of Cassiopeia. The nebula's ethereal glow might remind people of apparitions such as those reported by paranormal investigators. in reality, it's simply hydrogen that is being bombarded with ultraviolet radiation from the nearby, blue-giant star Gamma Cassiopeiae, causing it to glow in red light. The blue colour is from light reflected off of the nebula's dust. The IC 63 nebula is not the only object under the influence of the blinding star, which unleashes as much energy as 34000 suns. The Ghost Nebula is part of a much larger nebulous region surrounding Gamma Cassiopeiae that measures approximately two degrees on the sky, roughly four times as wide as the full Moon. They are all captured by the London-based artist Kasra Karimi. Shot in the UK & Spain with a telescope, camera, & an equatorial sky tracker, Kasra captures some of the most iconic deep space targets that are hundreds, thousands, & even millions of light years away from us, photons that have travelled an enormous distance to reach his camera. These photographs are the product of a lengthy process, from intensive planning, travelling to remote places -away from light pollution- & multiple imaging nights, to process, calibrate & edit the data which can take days & even weeks. The biggest obstacle that I face is the weather. There are many elements that must come together to have an ideal condition for a successful imaging session. All the photos are limited edition museum grade archival pigment prints. The copyright of this photo belongs to Kasra Karimi.
