My heart does a little skip when I come across charming vintage hand embroidered Christmas textiles like this one when I am in Sweden-I rarely find pieces of this quality. I particularly like the design of Jul tomtar (Christmas elves) busy with Christmas preparations-stirring a cauldron of Christmas porridge over a brightly burning fire, whilst a tankard of beer is overflowing from the barrel in the corner. At the top left is a window through which we can see the deep blue sky lit by a solitary star. The motifs have been neatly worked in stem stitch using different textures of cotton thread on a heavy cotton background fabric. It has been finished with red cotton fabric around the edges, which brings the design together. I think this was made to hang on the wall at Christmas time-though it will also be a wonderful table runner in the centre of the table. It has been carefully looked after & is clean & in good condition save that there is a slight yellow stain in one place above a line of green/grey stem stitch as I have tried to show in the close up photograph. It is barely noticeable-I can only see it when I hold the piece up to the light-but I want you to know about it. The perfect handmade piece with which to decorate the house this Christmas.
