UKIYO-E JAPANESE WOODBLOCK FRAMED ART PRINT Takiyasha the Witch & the Skeleton Spectre (or Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre Invoked by Princess Takiyasha ) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1833-1835. Centre part of woodblock triptych. The print is depicting a moment when Gashadokuro (a mythical giant skeleton, created from the amassed bones of people who died in battle), summoned by the sorceress Princess Takiyasha, is appearing behind the warrior Mitsukuni. Princess Takiyasha was the daughter of the warlord Masakado, who rebelled against the Emperor in Kyoto - the rebellion was unsuccessful & Masakado was killed. The great warrior ya no Tar Mitsukuni have heard the rumours that Princess was raising the army of loyal soldiers & the dead to continue her fathers rebellion & came to the palace to investigate. We can see the moment when the summoned giant demon skeleton is trying to scare away the warrior & his companion, but Mitsukuni seems unfazed & defiantly stares right back into monster's face. Reproduced from an archive image, respectfully & lovingly restored & enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes & colour fading.
