UKIYO-E JAPANESE WOODBLOCK ART PRINT Plum Park in Kameido (Kameido Umeyashiki ) by Hiroshige Utagawa, from the One Hundred Famous Views Of Edo series, 1857. The print is dominated by a dark trunk of a specific plum tree, the celebrated & the most famous tree in Edo, the Sleeping Dragon Plum (, garybai), renowned for the purity of its double blossoms, so white when full in bloom as to drive off the darkness, according to one Edo guidebook. The tree was situated in Umeyashiki, a plum garden by the banks of the Sumida River in Kameido. in the foreground at the top left of the image there's a glimpse of a park sign & between the branches the smaller trees are seen & many figures of visitors behind a low fence, admiring the exquisite view. Hiroshige's composition of the print is typically strong & original, with the powerful & dark body of the tree spreading across the image & then being suddenly cut off at the edges, as if it was a large abstract calligraphy print. The darkness of the trunk is offset & lifted by bright greens & reds of the ground & the sky, creating a perfect background for the white blossoms, some fully open in their delicate beauty, some still only white buds here & there. This already famous composition was made even more popular when Van Gogh, who was a collector of Japanese prints, has copied this & one other print by Hiroshige (Sudden Shower over Shin-hashi bridge & Atake) to try out the techniques that he admired in Hiroshige's work, such as cropped composition, strong use of outlines & colours & flat brushstrokes. Reproduced from an archive image, respectfully & lovingly restored & enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes & colour fading. A3 print, 297mm x 420mm.
