This epic print displays the famous Awa Province whirlpools, caused by the tide rushing through the Naruto Straits between Awaji Island & the north-western corner of Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku. As always with Hiroshige, the composition is all about the vantage point, with the eyes going from the furiously swirling whirlpools, to the rocks, battered by foamy waves, then to the fluttering birds & finally to the Awaji island on the horison, with the rosy skies behind it. Stunning! Reproduced from an archive image, respectfully & lovingly restored & enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes & colour fading.
