Description
This thrown (on the wheel) & altered stoneware bowl (5h x 10w x 6.5d) is a wonderful serving bowl or planter. Rice dishes, vegetables, bread rolls, mashed potatoes... all work very well, as does a plant, with shards or marbles in the bottom for drainage. It will look great as a decorative piece, with the added advantage of being functional. It is dishwasher & microwave safe, so don't be afraid to use it! It has a lot going on in the glazes because they are layered to create depth & range of color, starting from a very light blue to darker blue & purple highlights outside & inside. After throwing this piece as a round bowl, Sara gently alters it to make it oval. She carves out the feet & adds the handles to give the bowl some extra character. As a handmade piece, it is one of a kind. Once it is formed & dried, it goes in the first kiln firing to about 1800 degrees. Then the glazing begins. The piece is dipped in three different glazes & then fired again, this time to almost 2300 degrees. Opening the kiln after a glaze firing is always exciting because there is no way to predict exactly what will happen. After 30 + years of making pots, it's still a wonderful mystery!
