Miaow! Oh my goodness! What have I made? There are shades of the macabre, of Donnie Darko & Alice in Wonderland mixed up in this cat! I make small batches of hand sculpted or wheel thrown ceramics in my tiny back garden shed, at weekends & some evenings. I make approx 4-5 items a week, unless it is the school holidays (I am a full time high school art teacher). I love my cat Misty very much - she's a tortoiseshell & has been a wonderful companion during lockdown. This week she inspired me to make cat mugs! I have so far made four all together. Three will be put on Etsy in the next couple of days. All three have small eyes. The fourth, which is still drying, will have large, un-realistic, cabochon eyes like the skull mugs I make. I'm just trying things out at the moment. The first three mugs (this is the second) are all made from earthenware clay. First I made the basic mug shape & left it to dry for a day. Then I hand sculpted it over a couple of hours, adding more clay (they are quite heavy) & left it to dry for several days. Then it was bisque fired for 24 hours & left to cool. When cool, I hand painted each mug using underglaze watercolour paints. I spent approx 2 hours on each mug - they all look a little bit like my cat Misty crossed with Donnie Darko's rabbit! There's something a bit demonic & weird about them - I think it is because I made the eyes more realistic sized when most cat art has massively increased eyes because that's what we are more drawn to. I might try to make the eyes bigger if I make any more. I might not make some more though, because they take so long to make! The price reflects the time spent making. After painting, I left them to dry, then painted glaze over the top, back & interior. This one has a gorgeous brown fur-like interior & back made up of a variety of hand painted high quality glazes combined. I then dipped them in transparent top glaze to make them food safe. The base is unglazed & plain white(ish). They are meant to be more decorative than functional. Each one took approx 6 hours to make & repeated use could easily damage them. Their ears are quite delicate, despite their weight! If they were put in a washing up bowl or dishwasher the ears are likely to snap off. Instead, I would use them as decorative sculptures or little planters! Ideal for a cat lover or as a birthday present, or for someone who has recently lost a beloved pet.
