This mug has been reduced due to a white patch of bare clay on the reverse (see second picture) where my thumb pressed into the glaze when I dipped the top, transparent glaze. This fault makes it ornamental, as opposed to functional. It has been reduced as a result. If it was perfect & fully functional it would be twice the price! The gold lustre costs a fortune & it took hours to make! I am currently half way through making a second mug - this one is faulty due to the patch on the back below the rim. How it was made: It is a penguin mug & the first thing that I did was make a small, hand sculpted penguin & left it to dry. Next I made a basic mug cylinder by slip casting some earthenware clay. Next I added the handles, hand sculpted crystals, cloud, moon & dripped slip over the rim to make it drippy. I then pushed a hole in the base the same size as the penguin I had made. Next I cut the back off the penguin & added him to the mug using slip. I then left it to dry for a few days. After this I fired it in the kiln for 24 hours until it was hard. After cooling, I hand painted four shades of blue & white glaze over the main body of the mug & added iridescent pink over the crystals. Next I painted the top of the penguin black. It then returned to the kiln for a second 24 hour firing. After cooling, I hand painted the gold lustre using a tiny paint brush. The gold lustre is pure 22kt gold suspended in a gooey brow substance. You apply it almost blind & the brown goo burns away during the third firing. I painted this all over the crystals & moon. I then painted mother of pearl iridescent transparent glaze over the cloud & the penguin's tummy. You can see it shimmer if you move the mug in the light. It was then returned to the kiln for a third firing. It will arrive in a box, packaged in sustainable packaging such as tissue etc. If I find some bubble wrap to re-purpose, I will use that.
