Very large & very French chateau! Absolutely stunning antique French chocolate cup & saucer, hand painted & gilded. Dating to the early 1800s, originally a chocolate cup, when hot chocolate was rare & an expensive luxury. Regency - Jane Austen time! Large size, for a very generous cup of tea, coffee or cocoa. Beautiful shape of the cup, so typical for the first decade of the 1800s. Elaborate scrolled handle with a decorated lion head face underneath. The beautiful saucer is high - hot chocolate was poured into it to cool it down. Now the saucer can be used on its own to hold sweets or cookies. Beautifully hand painted in gold. Excellent condition. No chips or hairlines. The gold has mostly faded over the centuries on the cup, but is still very present in the saucer.Perfect for the shabby chic & all white style!
