Wheel thrown stoneware. Food safe. To preserve the bowl, we recommend hand-washing & not putting in the microwave. This bowl is a mother-daughter collaboration: the bowl was thrown, glazed & fired by Nina & the letters were carved together by Sonia & Nina. The words on this bowl (gam zu l'tova), an Aramaic expression found in the Talmud that mean this too is for good, are repeated three times around the bowl, adding to emphasis. If you would like the words written only once, please tell us. The story goes, that Nahum Ish Gamzu, would respond, no matter what happened in life, with Gam Zu L'tova (This too is for good or This too is for the best). It's up to an individual to discover for oneself that something is Gam Zu L'tova, not for one person to tell another upon hearing of some misfortune. We have made many of these bowls & they are now sold out, so we we are making them to order. The idea for this bowl grew out of our desire to have a physical object to hold & use, that reminds us to find the good in our lives - both to affirm that which is clearly good, & to gain perspective when faced with difficulty, setbacks, suffering. There is not always an immediate or apparent good that comes from suffering, but our sages urge us to look for it, to know that we cannot see the whole picture in the universe, only our Creator can, & to find a way to transform darkness into light.
