Rare carved camphor wood bureau made in Hong Kong, probably in the 1950's or even earlier. Wood carvers from Dongyang & Shanghai settled in Hong Kong in the early part of the 20th century & led to the founding of an eclectic furniture production dynasty based on prolific carving of camphor wood & teak pieces. This bureau is thought to be camphor wood & is both heavy & beautifully constructed with touches such as the desk flap supports coming out automatically to support the flap as it is opened. The lovely carving depicts junks & Chinese scenes, whilst the flap supports are carved as people. This is a rare & unusual piece in very good condition with no faults other than its age which is equally useful as a bureau or for cocktails. Our revived furniture is now beginning its new life & may show some signs of its old life.
